The 1620 Experience is a curriculum-based educational initiative designed to help students engage more deeply with early American history through narrative, primary sources, and structured learning.

The program integrates an eight-part documentary-style video series with dual-level curriculum materials for middle and high school students, creating a self-contained resource that can be used across a range of learning environments.

It is being developed as a free, accessible program for families, educators, and community-based learning organizations.

Purpose

The purpose of The 1620 Experience is to move beyond fragmented approaches to history education and create a learning experience that emphasizes:

  • context over memorization
  • understanding over recall
  • engagement over passive consumption

By presenting history as a sequence of ideas, decisions, and consequences, the program encourages students to think more critically about the past and its broader implications.

The Program

The 1620 Experience is structured around two integrated components:

1. Documentary Series

An eight-part video series that combines:

  • historical reenactment
  • narration
  • expert commentary

Each episode is designed to present events within a clear narrative framework, allowing students to follow developments over time and understand how individual decisions contributed to larger outcomes.

2. Curriculum Framework

Each episode is paired with structured study materials designed for two age groups:

  • Grades 6–8
  • Grades 9–12

The curriculum is designed to support:

  • independent learning
  • group study
  • classroom integration

It provides a clear pathway for students to engage with the material through guided questions, reflection, and analysis.

Educational Approach

The program is built on several core principles:

Narrative-Based Learning

Students engage more effectively when information is presented within a meaningful structure. Narrative provides context and continuity, allowing for deeper understanding.

Primary Source Engagement

Where possible, students are introduced to historical writings and perspectives, encouraging direct interaction with the ideas that shaped events.

Structured Flexibility

The program is designed to function across multiple environments, including homeschool settings, classrooms, and community-based learning programs.

Accessible Design

All materials are developed to be easy to use and widely accessible, removing barriers to participation while maintaining academic integrity.

Distribution Model

The 1620 Experience is designed to function as a distributed educational resource. Rather than being confined to a single delivery system, it is intended to be shared across:

  • homeschool networks
  • schools and co-ops
  • public libraries
  • museums and educational organizations

This approach allows the program to reach students through the environments where they are already learning.

Reach and Impact

In its initial phase, The 1620 Experience is projected to:

  • Reach more than 40,000 families
  • Engage 850–2,800 students in structured learning during Year 1
  • Expand to 5,000–8,500 students within 24 months

Impact will be measured through engagement, curriculum use, and participation across distribution channels.

Partnerships

The program is being developed with a collaborative model in mind. Organizations that serve students and families—such as libraries, schools, museums and educational networks—play a critical role in expanding access to high-quality learning resources.

By aligning with these organizations, The 1620 Experience is positioned to extend its reach while supporting existing educational efforts.

Why This Matters

Education is changing.  Students are learning across multiple environments, and families and institutions are seeking resources that are both meaningful and accessible.

The 1620 Experience is designed to meet that need by providing a program that is:

  • structured and academically grounded
  • adaptable to different learning contexts
  • accessible without financial barriers

By focusing on engagement, context, and accessibility, the program aims to support a more connected and effective approach to learning.
